This is a photojournalism story about a Cedar Key clammer named Steven Murphy. As a lifelong Cedar Keyan, Murphy’s family endured the fishing net ban in 1994. With the loss of the town’s most lucrative industry, Murphy and many others had to turn to clamming. Today, Cedar Key represents 90% of Florida’s output of clams, capturing nearly 125 million every year. Steven Murphy is just one of many clammers that dive in the chilling water every single morning—dreaming of eventually starting their own independent clamming business.
This section is a collection of my photos taken during my time as a journalism undergraduate at the University of Florida. Many were used for my published articles with WUFT. Maintaining journalistic integrity, these photos have minimal post-production edits.
